The Scholarium of Radiant Truth is the third pillar of the Luminous Conclave — its institution of research, education, and knowledge management. It maintains the Conclave's libraries, funds and directs scholarly research, trains the next generation of scholars, and — critically — controls what knowledge is disseminated, to whom, and on what terms.
To think of the Scholarium as merely a university or archive is to misunderstand it. It is all of those things, but it is also the Conclave's memory, its intelligence bureau, and its first and last line of defence against inconvenient truths. Knowledge, properly catalogued and properly controlled, is one of the foundations of the Conclave's six-century tenure as Eryndor's dominant institution. The Scholarium is what makes that control possible.
The Scholarium is headed by the Grand Archivist, who sits on the Council of Light. The current Grand Archivist is Serelith Voss, a half-elf scholar of exceptional precision and institutional memory who has held the position for twenty-two years.
Role
The Scholarium's responsibilities span education, research, archival management, and doctrinal scholarship. Its scholars train under structured supervision, advancing through ranks that correspond to expanding archive access and research independence. Its archivists maintain records stretching back to the founding of the Luminous Conclave — and further, into the pre-Luminous Era, though those materials are held under the strictest restrictions.
Beyond its academic function, the Scholarium controls the Conclave's official historical record. What is known about the past, what is taught to initiates, what research is approved for publication — all of this passes through the Scholarium's oversight. This makes the Grand Archivist one of the most quietly powerful figures in the institution.
Ranks
Scholarium rank determines both an individual's research responsibilities and their level of archive access:
- Grand Archivist — head of the Scholarium, Council of Light member. Controls research funding, archive access, and the Conclave's official scholarly positions.
- Sage of the Inner Light — senior researchers with access to the Restricted Archives. Fewer than ten hold this rank at any given time, each bound by additional secrecy oaths.
- Illuminated Scholar — established researchers and senior academics with access to the Extended Archives. Teach, publish (with Scholarium approval), and conduct approved research programmes.
- Seeker — junior researchers with access to the Common Archives. Handle field research, cataloguing, translation, and the practical work of scholarship. Nivael Thessalune holds this rank as his cover identity within the Conclave.
- Scribe — students and apprentices with access to teaching materials and supervised sections of the Common Archives only.
The Archive System
The Scholarium's archive holdings are divided into four tiers, each requiring progressively higher rank to access:
- Common Archives — accessible to Seekers and above. Theology, history, approved arcane theory, regional records, standard bestiary. Comprehensive enough that most Seekers never suspect there is more.
- Extended Archives — accessible to Illuminated Scholars and above. Suppressed historical accounts, advanced arcane research, detailed maps of dangerous regions, diplomatic correspondence, records of unusual events.
- Restricted Archives — accessible to Sages of the Inner Light and above. Documented eldritch phenomena, pre-Luminous Era artefacts, theological inconsistencies that do not fit doctrine. Access requires additional secrecy oaths beyond standard Scholarium membership.
- The Sovereign Vault — accessible only to the Radiant Sovereign and selected Council of Light members. Its contents are not disclosed. Its existence is a matter of persistent rumour among senior scholars; the Conclave neither confirms nor denies it.
