The Luminous Conclave is the dominant religious institution on the continent of Eryndor — and, within its home city of Lighthaven, a sovereign government in its own right. It serves the god Seraphel, the Radiant Guardian, and has shaped the spiritual, political, and military landscape of Eryndor for nearly six centuries. No other institution comes close to matching its reach, its resources, or its authority.
To most people on Eryndor, the Luminous Conclave simply is the faith. Its temples are in every major city. Its priests conduct births, deaths, and marriages. Its charitable workers feed the hungry and tend the sick. It is woven into daily life so thoroughly that questioning the Conclave and questioning Seraphel feel, to most of the faithful, like the same thing.
History
The Luminous Conclave was founded at the dawn of the Luminous Era — 0 LE — by Saint Aelar the Illuminator, a figure whose life and deeds are now so thoroughly enshrined in doctrine that separating the historical person from the religious myth is nearly impossible. What is established is that Aelar unified disparate communities of Seraphel's faithful under a single institutional structure during the final decades of the Age of Ascendancy, integrating the existing Covenant of the Radiant Dawn into the new institution. The year of that unification became the year zero of the calendar that the Conclave has maintained and extended ever since.
The Conclave marks the passage of centuries with grand extension ceremonies, each renewing the Luminous Era for another hundred years. The current year is 587 LE. The next extension ceremony is due at 600 LE — thirteen years away.
In the centuries since its founding, the Conclave has grown from a religious institution into something considerably more complex: a theocratic state, a military power, a continent-spanning bureaucracy, and the primary keeper of recorded history on Eryndor. Its official records are the most comprehensive archive of the Luminous Era in existence — though what those archives contain at their deeper levels, and what they might be concealing, is a matter that few are in a position to ask.
Nature and Reach
Within Lighthaven and its immediate territories, the Conclave functions as a government in the fullest sense. Canon law is the legal code. Its courts administer justice. Its treasury collects taxes. Its military maintains order. The Radiant Sovereign is head of state in every meaningful way.
Beyond Lighthaven, the Conclave does not govern — but it influences. Towns across the Celestial Plains, the Verdant Vale, and even parts of the Frostpeak Highlands follow Seraphel as their faith, maintain Conclave temples, and receive Conclave missionaries and aid workers. Their mayors and councils are their own, their laws are their own — but the local Prelate carries weight, and the Conclave's goodwill is not something most communities can afford to lose.
The Ironclad Dominion is the notable exception — it has historically maintained its independence from Conclave religious authority and does not recognise its jurisdiction.
Governing Authority
The supreme authority of the Luminous Conclave — head of faith and head of state. The current Radiant Sovereign is Lady Elira Dawnstar. The position is theoretically elected by the Council of Light, but in practice is held until death or abdication. The Sovereign chairs the Council and is the single individual whose authority overrides all others within the institution without qualification.
The Council of Light
The Conclave's governing body. It currently holds seven seats, including the Radiant Sovereign. Each Council member is commonly addressed as "High Priest" regardless of their specific role, and each oversees a major portfolio corresponding to one of the Five Pillars or a critical institutional function. The Council's full composition is a matter of some public knowledge — though not all of its members are equally visible to outsiders. A separate article covers the Council of Light in detail.
The Five Pillars of Radiance
The Conclave describes its structure as resting on five institutional pillars — a phrase embedded in doctrine, architecture, and ceremony. The great hall of the Grand Cathedral of Seraphel has five pillared aisles. The Conclave's official seal depicts five rays of light. New Acolytes are taught the Five Pillars as the foundation of Seraphel's earthly order.
Pillar I: The Ecclesiastical Hierarchy
The Faith
The spiritual core of the Conclave and its most visible face. Priests, theologians, missionaries, and temple administrators. This is the institution most people interact with — the Luminary who leads the local service, the Acolyte in training, the Prelate who represents the Conclave in a given city. It is also the largest pillar by membership.
Pillar II: The Radiant Host
The Military
The Conclave's armed forces, divided into two distinct divisions that operate in parallel but do not share a command structure.
The Auragon Corps is the Conclave's elite — conditioned soldiers of exceptional capability, commanded directly by the Council of Light. They are few in number but formidable beyond easy comparison. Internal ranks: Instrument, Ordained, Exalted. Nine specialisation types.
The Luminous Guard is the conventional military — larger, more visible, and responsible for the daily work of defence, patrols, and garrison duty. Its soldiers are ordinary people who have taken an oath of service.
Pillar III: The Scholarium of Radiant Truth
Knowledge
The Conclave's research, education, and knowledge-management institution. It maintains Lighthaven's extensive libraries, funds approved research, trains the Conclave's scholars, and — critically — controls what knowledge is disseminated and to whom. Its archive system is tiered:
- Common Archives — accessible to Seekers and above. Theology, approved history, standard scholarship.
- Extended Archives — accessible to Illuminated Scholars and above. More sensitive historical and arcane material.
- Restricted Archives — accessible to Sages of the Inner Light and above. Documented phenomena, pre-Luminous Era material, theological inconsistencies.
There are persistent rumours among senior scholars of a further tier — sometimes called the Sovereign Vault — containing records accessible only to the Radiant Sovereign and selected Council members. The Conclave neither confirms nor denies its existence.
Pillar IV: The Radiant Chancellery
Governance
The bureaucratic arm that keeps Lighthaven functioning as a city and the Conclave functioning as an institution. It manages the treasury, diplomacy with other powers, the Justiciar Courts, civil administration, infrastructure, and the endless logistical work of running a continent-spanning religious organisation.
Key offices include the Exchequer, the Office of External Affairs, the Justiciar Courts, and the Office of the Faithful.
Pillar V: The Covenant of Mercy
Compassion
The Conclave's charitable and humanitarian arm. The Covenant operates hospitals, refugee camps, disaster relief operations, missionary expeditions, and education programmes for lay faithful. Uniquely among the Five Pillars, it serves everyone — including non-believers — as a demonstration of Seraphel's grace. It is the Conclave's most publicly beloved institution.
The Covenant's head, the High Compassionate, reports to the Council of Light but does not sit on it.
The Sixth Pillar: The Seraphic Inquisition
The Seraphic Inquisition is the Conclave's hidden sixth pillar — unacknowledged in public doctrine, unknown to most of the institution's membership, and operating entirely outside the Five Pillars' acknowledged structure. Its existence is known to the Council of Light and to those individuals specifically cleared to interact with it.
The Inquisition is organised into compartmentalised cells, each operating independently. All cells report to a single handler: Sir Althorn Lightbearer, who serves as the Inquisition's operational head and the sole point of contact between the cells and the Council of Light. Inquisitors maintain cover identities within the Five Pillars — their true role concealed behind plausible official assignments. The Lumina Cell is one such cell.
The Inquisition's headquarters occupies the classified lower levels of the Sanctum of Purity in Lighthaven.
