The Luminous Guard is the conventional military division of the Radiant Host — the backbone of the Luminous Conclave's armed presence across Eryndor. Where the Auragon Corps is the Conclave's scalpel, the Guard is its backbone. Normal soldiers with normal emotions, families, ambitions, and complaints. They hold the walls, patrol the streets, man the gates, guard the temples, and do the thousand unglamorous things that keep Lighthaven standing.

The Guard is larger than the Auragon Corps by a significant margin. It is also, by every meaningful measure, less powerful. This is a fact every Guard soldier lives with, some more gracefully than others.

Role

The Guard is responsible for the daily work of the Conclave's military presence: garrisoning cities, patrolling roads, defending temples, escorting clergy, and managing crowd control during festivals and holy days. Within Lighthaven specifically, the Guard patrols the streets and the cathedral district, while the Auragon Corps holds the city's main entrances and more sensitive locations. Outside Lighthaven, the Guard maintains garrisons across the Celestial Plains and other Conclave-aligned regions.

Guard soldiers are the face of the Conclave's military that most people actually encounter. They are recognisable, approachable, and human in a way the Auragons are emphatically not.

Ranks

The Guard's command structure runs from the Lord Marshal at the top through to Aspirants still in training:

  • Lord Marshal — supreme commander of the Luminous Guard. A single person holds this title. Answers to the Council of Light's military High Priest and coordinates with the Auragon Corps, but cannot command it.
  • Radiant Commander — commands a major strategic theatre or garrison, such as Lighthaven's city defence or a regional border force. Three to five at a time.
  • Lightward — mid-level officer commanding a company-sized unit of fifty to a hundred soldiers. The highest rank that regularly sees frontline duty.
  • Dawnblade — junior officer leading squads of ten to twenty. Handles patrol routing, discipline, and tactical execution.
  • Sentinel-at-Arms — senior enlisted soldier. Squad second, trainer, specialist. No command authority over officers, but experienced enough that smart officers listen.
  • Warden — standard soldier, trained and assigned to a garrison or field unit.
  • Aspirant — recruit in training. Has sworn the oath but not yet completed instruction.

Culture

Guard soldiers are people — and the Guard's culture reflects that in ways that set it apart sharply from the Auragon Corps. There are cliques, rivalries, reputations, and long-running arguments about patrol assignments. Junior officers learn their trade from Sentinels-at-Arms who have forgotten more about soldiering than most Lightwards will ever know. Veterans tell stories. Aspirants try not to embarrass themselves.

Serving alongside Auragons is a persistent feature of Guard life in Lighthaven, and it is — to put it plainly — unsettling. Guard soldiers who have worked near Auragons accumulate stories they share only among themselves: the Vanguard that took a crossbow bolt to the eye and pulled it out mid-stride; the Sentinel that stood in one spot for fourteen hours without shifting weight; the Harbinger that addressed a dying soldier by designation number instead of name. There is professional jealousy, resentment, and genuine quiet horror. There is also grudging respect — when things go truly wrong, Guard veterans are unanimous that you want Auragons beside you.

Notable postings within the Guard include the Cathedral District garrison in Lighthaven — a prestige assignment requiring discipline and composure — and the Sanctum of Purity garrison, the most sensitive Guard posting in the city and a mark of significant institutional trust.
