The Terramites are a hivemind insectoid species found throughout the Sunset Desert and in most major cities of the region. They are perhaps best known for the vast tunnel networks they excavate beneath urban settlements — a feature so integrated into desert city infrastructure that most inhabitants regard the tunnels as unremarkable background fact. What lies beneath their cities is Terramite work. It has simply always been there.

Biology and Hivemind

Terramites are insectoid in form and are psychically linked to one another through what appears to be a shared mesh network of consciousness. Individual Terramites do not act as independent agents in the way most sapient species do — their behaviour is coordinated through the collective, with decisions and responses propagating through the network rather than originating in any single individual. The location of whatever serves as the network's central processing node is not publicly known.

The hivemind makes Terramites highly efficient and deeply difficult to negotiate with in conventional terms — there is no individual to bargain with, no leader to appeal to, no single point of authority. Communication with them is possible, but requires patience and an understanding that one is effectively speaking to a distributed mind rather than a person.

The Tunnel Networks

The Terramites excavate and maintain extensive tunnel systems beneath the cities of the Sunset Desert. In Lythor, these tunnels form a known and mapped (at least in part) subsurface layer beneath the city, used for drainage, storage, and passage. City inhabitants interact with the outer edges of this network as a matter of course, and the Terramites themselves move through the tunnels largely unnoticed.

The full extent of the Terramite tunnel network is not known. There is reason to believe it extends well beyond individual cities — perhaps spanning much of the continent. The tunnels are wide enough to navigate on foot, and their lower levels descend to depths that have not been fully explored by surface dwellers.

The tunnels are not always safe. Their lower reaches, in particular, have been used for purposes the Terramites neither sanctioned nor prevented — including, as the Lumina Cell discovered in Lythor, as a site for eldritch rituals conducted by the Illuminated Void.
