Deva's Sanctum is a sacred cave system located near the town of Brightwater in the Celestial Plains. It is the source of the underground spring that has supplied Brightwater with its famously pure water for as long as recorded history. The Sanctum is tended by the local chapel of Seraphel and is regarded by the Luminous Conclave as a minor but genuine holy site.

Origins

According to Luminous Conclave doctrine, the Sanctum takes its name from a Deva — a celestial servant of Seraphel — who gave her life at this location in an age long past. As the story is taught, the Deva descended to the mortal world in a time of great darkness to shield the land from corruption. Unable to return to the celestial realm after spending her divine essence in this act, she chose to remain, pouring what remained of her light into the earth itself. Where she came to rest, a spring emerged — clear, cold, and touched with a faint healing quality that has never faded. The cave that formed around the spring became known as Deva's Sanctum in her memory.

Whether this account is literal truth, poetic tradition, or something in between is a matter scholars within the Conclave occasionally debate in quiet corners. What is not disputed is that the spring's water carries measurable restorative properties, and that the cave itself has an atmosphere of stillness that many visitors describe as unlike any natural space they have entered.

The Spring and the Tears of the Celestial

The spring pool at the heart of the Sanctum is the cave's most significant feature. Deeper within the cave system, beyond the main chamber, lies a secondary, undisturbed shrine where a purer concentration of the spring's waters can be collected. This water — known as the Tears of the Celestial — holds greater potency than the ordinary spring water that flows into Brightwater's supply. The Lumina Cell collected a quantity of the Tears of the Celestial during their visit to the Sanctum.

History

The Corruption

At some point prior to the Lumina Cell's first mission, an unknown figure infiltrated Deva's Sanctum and placed a dark crystalline shard — a void shard — within the spring pool. The shard's eldritch energy spread through the water, corrupting it and calling forth hostile entities within the cave: water elementals warped by the dark energy, and cave fishers drawn in by the disturbance. The corruption manifested in Brightwater's water supply as a faint but unmistakable taint, alarming the town and drawing the attention of the local chapel.

The Lumina Cell's Visit

Commissioned by Priestess Seraphine of Brightwater's chapel, the Lumina Cell investigated Deva's Sanctum as their first joint mission. Descending into the cave, they encountered and defeated the corrupted water elementals and the cave fishers that had taken up residence alongside them. At the centre of the spring pool they found the void shard, which they recovered rather than destroyed. Sir Althorn Lightbearer then led them to the inner shrine, where they collected the Tears of the Celestial. With the shard removed, the spring began to clear.

The party departed with both the void shard and the Tears of the Celestial in their possession.

The Cronolithe Vision

Weeks later, during the Cronolithe ritual conducted at the Oracle's Oasis, the Lumina Cell witnessed a vision of the original infiltration of Deva's Sanctum. The vision showed a cloaked drow entering the cave and placing the void shard in the spring pool while wielding Nocturne. Carver identified the figure as Lord Erevan Shadowspeaker — the same man who had destroyed his former cell.

The vision also featured an unexpected presence: a pale figure in a dark business suit, known to the party only as Mr. Vermouth, who had appeared to them on prior occasions under circumstances that defied easy explanation. Despite the vision being a window into the past, Mr. Vermouth appeared to look directly at the party — seemingly aware that he was being observed across time. The implications of this remain unexplained.
