Void Wisp
A Void Wisp is a small, incorporeal aberration of eldritch origin. It hovers silently, passes through solid matter, and radiates an aura of creeping madness that can destabilise the minds of those who linger too close. Void Wisps are not aggressive by nature so much as they are drawn — to eldritch energy, to corruption, to objects and places where the boundary between the material world and something else has grown thin.
Appearance
A Void Wisp manifests as a swirling vortex of deep purples and blacks, resembling a miniature black hole suspended in the air. It pulses with a cold, eerie light that does not illuminate so much as draw the surrounding darkness inward. Within the vortex, tiny points of light flicker and shift like distant stars, giving the impression of a pocket of open void contained in a small, slowly rotating mass.
The wisp does not fly so much as phase through the air, leaving a brief trail of subtly distorted reality in its wake — a shimmer, a wrongness, as though the space it just occupied has not quite returned to normal. When it is preparing to release a pulse of energy, the stars within it quicken and brighten. When it spreads its maddening aura, those stars seem to scatter and dance.
Behaviour
Void Wisps do not communicate and appear to have no social structure. They are drawn instinctively toward concentrations of eldritch energy — corrupted locations, void-touched artefacts, and areas where the fabric of reality has been weakened. Once in proximity to such a source, they linger, orbit, and become territorial in a mindless, instinctual way.
They are dangerous less because of their direct attacks than because of the aura of eldritch wrongness they emit. Prolonged proximity to a Void Wisp risks creeping mental degradation — a disorientation that experienced travellers learn to recognise and retreat from quickly.
Wisps cannot speak, though they understand the alien language known as Deep Speech. Whether this implies genuine comprehension or merely a passive resonance with that language's frequencies is unknown.
Known Weaknesses
Void Wisps are resistant to most conventional physical harm — blades and blunt force pass through their incorporeal forms with reduced effect. Psychic attacks similarly have little purchase on them. However, they are notably vulnerable to force damage, and suffer harm when they attempt to pass through solid objects and end their movement inside one — a property that experienced combatants can exploit by forcing the wisp into tight or enclosed spaces.
Encounter Areas
Void Wisps are most commonly encountered in areas touched by eldritch corruption — near void shards, desecrated holy sites, ley line disturbances, or locations with a history of dark ritual activity. They have been observed in open wilderness when drawn by the presence of a corrupted artefact being carried nearby. The Lumina Cell encountered one on the road between Brightwater and Shadowfen, apparently drawn to the Void Shard the party was transporting.
They are more common and more dangerous closer to the Eldritch Wastes, where ambient eldritch energy is high enough to sustain them without any specific anchor.
Origins
The true origins of Void Wisps are not established in any scholarly record accessible to the general public. The Luminous Conclave classifies them as eldritch aberrations and offers little further explanation. Independent scholars have speculated that they may be fragments of eldritch energy that have developed a rudimentary form, drawn into quasi-existence by the same forces that produce more complex aberrations — but this remains theory. What creates them, how long they persist, and whether they can be destroyed permanently or merely dispersed are all open questions.
