Shadowfen is a town in the Celestial Plains, situated near the border of the Dragonspire Mountains. It is a working settlement of modest size — no grand institutions or landmarks, but well-placed on trade routes that pass between the mountains and the more populous cities of the Plains. Its proximity to the Dragonspire Mountains makes it a natural staging point for expeditions into that range, and the town has a small but established community of scholars, traders, and specialists who service such work.
The Luminous Conclave maintains a temple here with local clergy. A mission board at the temple serves as the town's informal hub for contracted work.
Notable Residents and Figures
Thalindor
An alchemist and consultant to the Luminous Conclave, specialising in the creation of healing potions and other alchemical preparations. The cell's first mission to Shadowfen was undertaken on his behalf. Thalindor required a rare herb — Drachenwurz — that grows only in proximity to dragon lairs in the Dragonspire Mountains. He provided the cell with a teleportation scroll for direct transit to the mountains, a map to the relevant locations, and a magical amulet for the return journey.
Grimwald the Sage
A scholar with a particular interest in ancient ruins and artefacts. During the cell's stay in Shadowfen, Grimwald contracted them to retrieve the Orb of Eldritch Sight from a set of ruins in the Dragonspire Mountains. In exchange, he provided access to his private library.
The Lumina Cell's Operations in Shadowfen
The Lumina Cell visited Shadowfen on at least two occasions in 587 LE, both times in connection with missions into the Dragonspire Mountains.
First Visit — The Dragonspire Mission
The cell was dispatched to Shadowfen to assist Thalindor. Using his teleportation scroll, they entered the Dragonspire Mountains and retrieved the Drachenwurz from a cave guarded by young wyverns. While in the mountains they also encountered Elandrial, a silver dragon — the descendant of an ancient dragon named Tel'Vorath whose bones rested nearby. Elandrial gifted the cell the crystallised heart of Tel'Vorath, a potent magical artefact, and offered his friendship.
The cell additionally located the ancient ruins sought by Grimwald, navigating traps and draconic puzzles to recover the Orb of Eldritch Sight. Contact with a second, dark-pulsing orb within the ruins produced a shared vision — the contents of which were redacted from the official report forwarded to Lady Elira Dawnstar by Sir Althorn Lightbearer.
Upon returning to Shadowfen, the cell delivered the Drachenwurz to Thalindor and the Orb to Grimwald. Tel'Vorath's heart was collected by Althorn on behalf of the Conclave.
It was also during this visit that Carver was introduced to the cell for the first time, joining temporarily before being formally assigned.
Second Visit — The Whispering Forest
During a subsequent stay, the cell investigated the Whispering Forest — a woodland to the west of Shadowfen from which villagers had gone missing. Inside, they encountered a landscape that seemed to resist navigation: every attempt to leave returned them to the same forest clearing. The source of the disturbance was an undead knight commanding a group of revenants, alongside a large carnivorous plant that blocked the exits. The full resolution of the investigation is not recorded here.
