Aberration
An aberration is a category of creature defined not by where it lives, but by where it is from. Aberrations originate from outside the known planes of existence — from the void that exists between worlds, beyond the structured fabric of the multiverse. Scholars of the Luminous Conclave sometimes call this place the Neverthere: a non-space that has no light, no law, and no meaning that mortal minds can hold for long without beginning to unravel.
Aberrations are not animals, not undead, not spirits. They are not native to any world or plane that has a name. They are intrusions — presences that do not belong in reality as mortals understand it, and whose very existence exerts a kind of pressure on the world around them.
Nature
What makes a creature an aberration is not its appearance — aberrations can look like almost anything, from a hovering mote of dark light to a vast, writhing mass of limbs and eyes — but its fundamental origin. Aberrations are made of something other than the matter and energy that compose the material world. They exist in defiance of natural law rather than in harmony with it.
Most aberrations have no concept of morality, society, or purpose recognisable to mortals. Some are mindless, drawn purely by instinct toward eldritch energy or warmth or movement. Others possess alien intelligence — coherent, even calculating — but oriented toward goals that have no frame of reference in mortal experience. Communication with aberrations is rarely possible and rarely safe. Many of them understand Deep Speech, the language that seems to resonate across the void, though what this implies about the void's nature is a matter of considerable debate.
Being near an aberration for extended periods carries the risk of Eldritch Madness — a degradation of the mind caused by proximity to something that fundamentally should not exist within the ordered fabric of reality.
Origins
The precise origin of aberrations is not well understood, even by the most learned scholars. The Luminous Conclave's official position is that they are corruptions — failed or rejected things cast out from the divine order. Independent scholars offer a different account: that aberrations are native to the void that predates the multiverse, drawn into existence whenever the boundary between that void and the material world is weakened or breached.
What is generally agreed upon is that aberrations become more numerous and more dangerous wherever eldritch influence is strong — near sites of dark ritual, corrupted ley lines, void-touched artefacts, or regions like the Eldritch Wastes, where the fabric of reality is thin.
Known Aberrations
The following aberrations have been encountered or documented by the Lumina Cell:
- Void Wisp — A small, incorporeal creature resembling a swirling vortex of dark energy. Drawn to eldritch corruption and dangerous due to its maddening aura.
Common Traits
While aberrations vary enormously in form and behaviour, several traits appear frequently enough to be considered characteristic:
- Incorporeality — Many aberrations can pass through solid matter, making conventional weapons less effective against them.
- Resistance to physical harm — Aberrations often shrug off damage from non-magical weapons.
- Eldritch auras — Prolonged proximity to aberrations risks inflicting Eldritch Madness on those nearby.
- Sensitivity to eldritch energy — Aberrations are frequently drawn toward concentrations of void energy, corrupted sites, or eldritch artefacts.
- Deep Speech — Many aberrations appear to understand Deep Speech, though most cannot or do not speak.
